In an earlier post, we had mentioned ISRO’s technology for making carbon foam, an emerging next generation, sponge-like engineering material with multiple applications.
Now, there is information that National Physical Laboratories also has technology for making carbon foams. It says its technology is low-cost. NPL is willing to transfer this technology to the industry.
NPL says its product is light-weight and has excellent properties in terms of density, porosity, compressive strength, electrical and thermal conductivity. Carbon foams can be used for lining containers for storing active materials for thermal energy storage, electrodes of electrochemical devices (Lithium-ion and Lead acid batteries), as adsorbents for large molecules, EMI shielding material for microwave absorption and high temperature insulation, filters and demisters (which are devices for separation of liquids and vapors.)
