Aluminium foam for making force absorbing structures from DMRL

Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory has developed Aluminium foams that can be used to build structures meant to absorb blast impact. These materials exhibit superior stiffness-to-weight ratio, vibration damping and resistance to fire, compared with polymer foams.  

A technology to make closed cell Aluminium blocks and cylinders through liquid metallurgy route is available with DMRL, which is a part of the Defence Research and Development Organisation. 

These foams come in cylindrical foam ingots of up to 220 mm diameter and plates of 400 mm x 300 mm x 100 mm size. They are of various geometries to address any specific production requirement and can be used to make sandwich panels with foam at the core. 

This product can be used to make crash resistant structures—such as automobile front and side bumpres, engine mounting brackets and nuclear transportation casks, says DMRL. Besides, being very light-weight, it is possible to make foam filled beams and channels for commercial vehicles. 

This product has density of 0. - 0.8 gm per cc; energy absorbed 1- 10 NJ per cubic meter.
