Bhabha Atomic Research Center has technology for manufacturing solar-powered desalination plants. These plants can operate on stand-alone basis, I.e., they require no electricity from the grid or battery.
BARC has technology to make these desalination plants in two versions. First, domestic use, which can produce 10 liters per hour; second, community version, that can produce 100 liters of water per hour.
These are simple machines to assemble which there is no need of any major technical knowledge. All it requires is space of about 10 square meters, apart from some more area to store inventory.
The desalination plants are like the conventional plants, which means they use ultra filtration process, the energy for which is derived from solar panels that are integrated with the unit.
BARC will transfer this technology for a fee of Rs 50,000. These solar powered desal plants are most suitable for providing drinking waters in remote areas. As such, they are a fit device for companies’ CSR projects—which means, a big market for these could be developed.
