BARC has technology for rapid composting of kitchen waste

Want to convert kitchen waste into compost in a very short time? Bhabha Atomic Research Centre can help. 

Composting waste from large kitchens, such as of hotels, restaurants and temples, can take a long time—months to years, depending upon the type of the waste. 

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has developed a cellulolytic fungus (a microbe) that can degrade waste rapidly – within weeks. The compost generated by this process has high carbon content which will help enrich soil.  

Chemical fertilizers with high Nitrogen but no Carbon content will temporarily help crop productivity but will have long term negative effects on soil, says BARC. However, the compost that will be produced by BARC’s microbe will have 1-2 per cent Nitrogen, 28-36 per cent Carbon and high water-holding capacity will be highly beneficial to soil.  

BARC is offering to provide this technology for a fee of Rs 25,000.
